SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) Flagler is part of a national network of groups and individuals working to undo the effects of white supremacy and to work for racial justice. Through community organizing, mobilizing, and education here in Flagler County, SURJ Flagler seeks to move white people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice. SURJ provides a space to build relationships, skills and political analysis to act for change. We want to envision our community as just, equitable, and one that works for everyone.
Systems of inequity in this country are built on the foundations of white supremacy - with toxic consequences for all of us. We seek to understand that white supremacy harms all of us -- including white people, though in very different ways than people of color. SURJ Flagler believes that in order to live in a just and equitable world, white people must do the work of unlearning and undoing our internalized white advantages, build meaningful relationships with other Flagler organizations intent on racial equity, and challenge those who seek to keep the many divided for the benefit of the few.
This personal work extends beyond self-transformation and into the Flagler community we’re a part of. We have a collective responsibility for addressing and mitigating white supremacy in our community. Structural change requires white folks taking collective action, with each other and with our local accountability partners--organizers and communities of color who have lived experiences with racism and sexism, and who fight for a better world.
We invite you to change the things you can no longer accept by joining SURJ Flagler! There are many ways you can become involved.
